My dad decided that today would be a good day to put the top down on the Miata, (its like 20 degrees outside!!) and tears a big gaping hole in the back window! Yep....

I’m not sure if that’s the original top but the owner’s manual explicitly states not to operate the soft top at temperatures before 40 degrees! Even then, I still wouldn’t operate an aftermarket top at such temperatures!
...So when are you going to upgrade to the NB-style soft top with the heated glass window?

Glass rear windows for the win. Sucks that it happened. I remember that the vinyl top on my NC was nearly impossible to get to go down easily below about 50*. When it was warm outside, it went down like buttah.

Umm, yeah. When my dad told me, I had a MAJOR facepalm moment! Apparently he didn’t know that, though. Pretty much as soon as we can order one! In fact, I’m not sure he didn’t do it on purpose, he’s been talking about getting the glass window top for a while now.

Oh yeah, in warm weather it was just 2 latches and BAM it was down! It’s funny, it seems like everyone on Oppo has had at least one Miata!

I am an old British Car guy. If you put the tops down properly the plastic windows don’t get folds in them. (not me or any shop I am affiliated with in the video below)
Is there some equivalent protocol that you Miata guys are supposed to follow? I know we get cars in the shop with tops folded improperly all the time.

and sounds like dad will be chipping in to help pay for it, sounds like a win win :P

I dunno the proper procedure for plastic window NA tops since I have a NB with a glass unit. I know guys who’ve put towels between folds to prevent creasing and guys with aftermarket zipper tops will unzip theirs before folding it up.

Yeah, we usually recommend people who buy tops with plastic rear windows to get the zip out rear. The top does fold a lot easier and honestly, once you zip down the rear window with the top up, you can see a lot better and get great ventilation.

Haha yep... And technically it is his car, but that’s what I’ll be driving once I get my license. So yes, definitely a win!

I did that in my first Miata too, I had bought it over the winter and was overly excited to try to put the top down for the first time. And then after it broke I realized it had a zip out window.... Very expensive stupid mistake.
